Festivals in Brava

The feast of São João, for which many emigrants return.
A few days before the feast, women begin the ritual stomping of the corn, accompanied by others singing in high notes and clapping to a complex rhythm until the preparation is complete. Also there is the decorating of the mast of Cutelo Grand with artfully woven breads, cakes, fruits and drinks and protected from theft by children.
On the day of the festival, the mast is hoisted up. At the right moment, the pulley is cut, the mast falls to the ground and the children run to grab the loot. In Vila Nova Sintra, several makeshift bars are set up in a certain square opposite the market, where music, alcohol and dancing reign.
