Beaches in Cabo Verde

The beaches in Cabo Verde are known for their breathtaking views, crystal clear waters, and miles of virgin coastline. Boa Vista and Maio have the best white sand beaches. It is important to know that not all beaches are safe for swimming due to the wind and currents. There are lifeguards in front of the hotels and in many beach clubs that can inform you about the swimming conditions that day.

Boa Vista

Fogo

In Fogo it is often dangerous to swim off Fogo. When the sea is calm you can swim at the beach at the port, and at Praia Nossa Senhora. The best place to swim in Fogo is Ponta da Salina wich has a stunning cove with black rock formations smothered by white seaspray and riddled with grottos and reefs. You can get there on the São Jorge aluguer.

Maio

Maio has many beaches, some of which are breathtakingly secluded, remote, and inaccessible. Bitcharocha is near Vila de Ponta Preta, but caution is advised because of strong underwater currents. Calheta has probably the best accessible beach for swimming, which slopes gently and is usually safe.
Santana beach is a beautiful half-moon-shaped beach northwest of Morrinho that is mostly desert. Porto Cais is a secluded, beautiful beach just west of Morrinho.

Santiago

Santiago’s beaches cannot be compared with those of Boa Vista, Sal and Maio. Tarrafal is the best, it’s a white sand beach with a bay, and you’ll find it’s very busy on weekends. If you want something different, head to Ribeira da Prata, just a short drive south of Tarrafal, where you’ll find a black sand beach with lush green palm trees. You can also head to Praia Baixo or the small and popular Quebra Canela in Praia. São Francisco is another option, but harder to get to except on weekends when locals go there from Praia.

Santo Antão

For many beaches on Santo Antão, it should be noted that they disappear under water between October and May. So, the best time to visit the beach on Santo Antão is during the summer months from June to September. Also, the water is much calmer for swimming in the summer. Along the coast east of Cruzinha da Garça you will find several beaches, some with black sand, others with white sand. Our favorite black sanded beaches are listed below:

São Vicente

The most popular beach is the now enlarged sandy beach of Laginha. It is located beyond the fortress, to the north. It is safe for swimming and has an outdoor pool and several bars and restaurants. On weekends, locals enjoy the nightlife with live music and a disco.
